Unlike the other people who work in fashion, Janey Sweet enjoys eating and she is not afraid to admit it. But when her business partner and best friend, Beau, tells her that she needs to lose weight or she will lose her job, Janey has no choice but to go on a diet and hit all the gyms, yoga classes and juice bars that New York has to offer – including the Free the Nipple Yoga that, as the title implies, is practised topless. Along with old and new friends, Janey embarks on weeks of diets and exercise but at what price? In the meantime, Janey’s cousin, Ivy, is having her own problems as she finds herself working for a gym where people pay lots of money to be insulted during the workout.I loved the authors’ first book, The Knockoff, so I was very excited about this new book and I wasn’t disappointed. Fitness Junkie is a hilarious, charming and terrific read. Some of the yoga and gym classes that Janey attends are ridiculous and seem so unrealistic that I was surprised to find out they really exist. Janey’s adventures as she tries class after class made me laugh out loud and I felt for her as throughout the novel she evaluates her relationship with Beau and finally discovers his true character. Janey, her best friend CJ, and her cousin Ivy are likable and honest.
Clap your hands if you love a fun book! Now get yourself a copy of Lucy Sykes and Jo Piazza’s novel FITNESS JUNKIE. Mind you, it’s not all fun and games when it comes to the fitness-obsessed. There is the underbelly of the world of get in shape and what it takes to look picture perfect. And, when I say anything, I mean anything. What’s a just divorced girl to do when she is jilted by her bff and business partner because he tells her she needs to shed a few pounds? She takes control. Her crew, which consists of her good friend, cousin, who is the goddess of SoarBarre, and eventually raining men, Janey is on a roll. Not eating one, although she has no problem with carbs, but working out like a fiend. This new world that she has discovered includes a shaman. Yep. And, New York’s finest underground Workout that only the elite can get an invitation to, to look fabulous. But at what price? The Workout – picture Stepford Wives. You know those robotic gals who wore floppy hats and long, frilly dresses but this time, cult-following can’t think for themselves women dressed in requisite costumes of all-grey, oh, didn’t you get the memo, workout attire.Janey’s tale doesn’t revolve only around her quest to get in shape. Her romantic life gets a boost. Juice bar dynamics that will make you spit yours out because you’re laughing aloud. A hilarious first date that involves a new kind of workout of the dumpster diving variety. A dreamy older man enters the picture who is the epitome of culture and social graces. Can he be for real.In FITNESS JUNKIES, these are the new junkies. And there will always be a pusher ready to peddle the latest drug of choice.Â
Despite my appreciation for what you might call more literary fiction, I really liked this book. It is fast-paced, well-written, characters well drawn, and entertaining (humorous) throughout. There's a warmth to the tone that keeps it from seeming too shallow or snarky. Plus I really like the message that body shaming (and self-shaming) is a problem for contemporary women (and one we can overcome). I would read more by these authors.
The best character in this book is the fitness watch and I've already forgotten its name. So there.
I started reading this with the expectation that I would be more energized to work out after this. Lucy Sykes and Jo Piazza genuinely write great stories that are relevant and hilarious. I've gone through my own weight issues and sometimes you just need a boost. This reminded me of all of the things that I need to be right now, happy and healthy without the dose of neuroticism that comes with trying to lose weight. Thank you Jo and Lucy, I can start my year anew, my goals refreshed.
I really enjoyed it: satirical, edgy, funny, and still sweet. This feels like an expose of New York craziness. I was rooting for Janey all the way through. I loved The Knockoff by the same authors. I think Fitness Junkie is even better. Sykes and Piazza are so funny and pretty clever too. This one is light and frothy, but it packs a punch. Now, I'm just going out to a naked yoga class...
As someone in the fitness industry I thought this was a brilliant parody of the extreme lengths we go to to achieve often unrealistic results. Very funny without crossing the line into absurd. Great summer read.
I tried hard to give this book a chance, but it was just SO boring. The writing is pretty bad, story was just all over the place. Only got a couple chapters in when I said 'forget it' and moved on to a new book. This one has been donated.
