The book identified the crew very well, and some of the passengers. It also identified the rescue people as well and the details leading up to the flight. The conditions for such a flight, seemed a little on the edge, without the extra fuel tank. I feel it should have been installed before the long flights over water were considered. Also, the P.A system from the cock-pit should have been operational before the plane left the ground. Lack of communication played a big part as the events unraveled. The author seemed to do a lot of research for this book, and it covered just about everything. However, it still seems like profit, always comes at a high price. People have to loose their lives for other people's gains.Good book, I recommend it to those that choose to take up flying for a career, and those that like to know simply more about events of an accident like this, which is not in the News papers.

After reading Scapegoat by this author and thoroughly enjoying it I purchased 35 miles from Shore. I wasn't disappointed, another very well researched portrayal of the chain of events surrounding this flight as well as an interesting look into the airline industry in a different time.Another reviewer here points out quite nicely the lack of CRM and it's contribution to this disaster. Simply put, CRM, Cockpit Resource Management or "good people skills" was never emphasized in the airline industry till the 1980's. This as a result of the industry finally coming to terms with the fact that an autocratic "skygod" dramatically reduces the efficiency of the crew and substantially reduces the safety margin of any airline flight. The United DC8 at Portland in 1978 is another good example. That plane crashed for really only one reason, the Captains poor CRM skills. However it occurred to me that in the 1970's there was no CRM training for pilots and autocratic pilots were tolerated. You could say they didn't know any better. So my initial reaction that the lack of CRM skills not being emphasized enough by the author is actually an accurate refection of the times.

Overall this book was extremely interesting. It starts slow because of the need to introduce all the characters and set the complicated stage that lead up to the accident. Once stage is set the book is a real page turner. Other than the pure human drama, the book is interesting to me because it highlighted the simple things that can be done to make an aircraft accident survivable. I will be much better prepared from now on when I fly.I think most people who are interested in aircraft will enjoy this book, but you must be willing to invest a little time to get through the first part. After that, hang on, it is a great read.

Emilio has managed to combine a description of flying skills, error chains, business plans, human emotions and tactical decision making into a fascinating and detailed aviation narrative. For me, some of the narrative recalled long ago experiences and refreshed past memories.Initially, the reader may question the value of the extensive detail. Quite soon the purpose of the detail becomes apparent and is looked forward to with anticipation. Today's airline passengers and flight crews would be well served by the detail presented in this account.

I just finished this book last night so maybe I can remember the details. The book itself was very good, a lot of details that were above my knowledge of flying an airplane. I can't criticize the writing but I sure can criticize the airline for all of it's disregard of passenger safety. I could not believe how they cut fuel to the bare minimum so they just "make it" to their destination. The plane maintenance sounded dismal to me, stuff missing or broken. I believe this whole tragedy could have been avoided by making sure pilots have enough fuel and then some, to get to their destination safely.

I read Emilio Corsetti's book, and thoroughly enjoyed it. This is a true account of a tragic ditching, in open water, of a Douglas DC-9 airliner, and the story of the passengers and crew. Most survived, but there were fatalities in this unfortunate accident. Corsetti interviewed many survivors from this ditching, including the Captain of this ill-fated flight, and also spoke with many of the rescuers. The narrative is exceptional, and the photos that accompany the story are fantastic. You will not want to put this book down once you start it. Highly recommended, I give it (5) stars. Until this book by Corsetti, there was no real description or account of this accident, which occurred in 1970. Well done, Emilio.

On May 2, 1970, a DC-9 jet with 57 passengers and a crew of six departed New York's JFK International Airport en route to the tropical island of St. Maarten. The flight ended four hours and thirty-four minutes later in the shark-infested waters of the Caribbean. It was, and remains, the only open-water ditching of a commercial jet. The subsequent rescue of survivors took nearly three hours and involved the coast guard, navy, and marines. This gripping account of that fateful day recounts what was happening inside the cabin, the cockpit, and the helicopters as the crews struggled against the weather and dwindling daylight to rescue the survivors who have only their life vests and a lone escape chute to keep them afloat.

... and unlike in the game of horseshoes, the consequences of not reaching the desired goal in this endeavor, would be, both, tragic and news-worthy. Author Emilio Corsetti does a fine job (through hours of interviews with survivors of ill-fated ALM Flight 980, as well as pain-staking research on the Internet) weaving together the events in place that, ultimately, brought down Overseas National Airways' DC-9, 35 miles short of its intended destination ... and he does so in a way that makes this tragic event read more like a novel than the subject of a day's headline news. A fast-paced story, that show-cases both the heroic efforts and dismal failures that were participants in this extraordinary event.
