One of the handful of books from my youth that I still pull out and read regularly...the humor hasn't dated, and actually has more resonance now than when the book was first published. Very much captures the thoughts and attitudes of die-hard baseball fans, which really haven't changed... even if the names have.
Bought this for my son in laws birthday. It DID take a while for him to receive it but he loved it.. ORDER EARLY....
I bought this book when it originally came out in 1973. I loved it then, and it is a kick to have an "e" version on Kindle. They preserved every aspect of the original layout and baseball card photography. Bravo!
Boy did this bring me back to my childhood. It was so good I swear I could smell the pink slab of bubblegum!

This is one of my all time favorites. I'm a life long baseball card collector and this book crafted my love of the cards "before my time". I am glad this was released on kindle so my children can read this as I did. The authors captured the passion of card collecting . You can tell that they "get it"
This is a book about baseball cards, primarily ones issued during the 1950s and 1960s, and the players on the cards. However, it is not to be confused with a serious baseball card book. Most of the cards/players profiled are rather obscure, yet the book is quite funny and enjoyable.On each page of the book there is an image, or images, of a baseball card, and the authors' commentary about the card and/or player in question. Oftentimes the comments have as much to do with the authors' childhood impressions as the actual player. Other times the comments are strictly related to the player or card, but are almost always comical.If you grew up as a baseball fan, if you love the lighter side of baseball, or if you have nostalgia for the long-lost days of youthful summers spent flipping cards and riding your bike, then this book will appeal to you.
I remember getting this book when it first came out in the mid-70s and absolutely loving it. I still have it, somewhat warped and yellowed, and I occasionally still open it to a random page, knowing that I will be smiling when I put it down (and that I can't possibly stop after one page)! If you are a baseball fan, have a sense of humor, and especially, of course, if you collected baseball cards during the "golden days" of "real" (issued one series at a time, not readily available as complete sets) Topps cards anytime in the interval from their beginning through 1973, I've got to believe you would love it, too. I am a bit younger than the authors, and so most of the cards and players I was already familiar with were more recent than many of their examples from the 50s, but oh, such great stories and such witty humor! If you can find this used somewhere, it is really worth the hunt. :->
