Review

''Steinbeck's journalism shares the enduring quality of his famous novel.''--Publishers Weekly''Steinbeck's potent blend of empathy and moral outrage was perfectly matched by the photographs of Dorothea Lange, who had caught the whole saga with her camera--the tents, the jalopies, the bindlestiffs, the pathos and courage of uprooted mothers and children.'' --San Francisco Review of Books''Contains some of Steinbeck's best journalism.'' --The Nation''Written in the best tradition of advocacy journalism…Steinbeck moves among the migrants, pen in one hand, fruit pail in the other, alternately picking and penning his way to literary glory.'' --The Village Voice

About the Author

John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, CA, in 1902. Steinbeck realized that the migration caused by the Dust Bowl was drastically changing the labor forces of California from the foreign “cheap labor” to a higher standard of living for the farm workers. He felt for these migrant workers, and with the help of a friend, Tom Collins, unsuccessfully tried to get federal aid and sympathy, as shown in the articles of The Harvest Gypsies. Steinbeck continued in his crusade, publishing The Grapes of Wrath, for which he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962.

These seven essays were written as articles for the San Francisco News in the heart of the Great Depression about the displaced farm families who had been kicked off their land due to bank foreclosures in the midst of the Dustbowl. Their land literally blew away after some drought stricken years. The appalling response of the whole nation was to stigmatize them as "lazy," which they were not - and as "dirty," without helping them to have access to water in which to bathe. First they were beaten down by nature -- and then by the banks, the agribusinesses in California and most of their fellow Americans. Steinbeck thought they would do better than had previous foreign born pickers because they had families. He was wrong. Their families became hostages to fortune and many many died of starvation. Not our finest hour!

"The Harvest Gypsies" is a collection of article Steinbeck wrote for the San Francisco News in 1936 after publication of his strike novel, "In Dubious Battle." It features his excellent, timely reporting on the plight of drought-displaced farm families, struggling as migrant farmhands in a hostile California, exploited by highly industrialized farm organizations and rejected by fearful residents.

News paper articles by Steinbeck from his touring of migrant worker's camps doing research for The Grapes Of Wrath. Prime example of compelling, activist, journalism. Moving and well written. A nice piece of history told first hand. A portrait of the Workers Camps and the anglo agricultural workers in the central valley in the middle of our Great Depression.

Steinbeck clearly makes it understandable how harsh life was for the Okie migrant workers in California. There are lessons from this book that all American students, high school and college, should take into consideration when treating fellow Americans.

Part of my family is in this and this is the way I grew up. This is some good reading and tells the story of truth. Must read!

A gift for my husband and we both loved it...Arrived quickly and in great condition. Thank you.

I really enjoyed the read. This story reminds us of the many that have had to live in unsavory conditions in the country.

I really enjoy Steinbeck literature.
